Temple of Terror! PBL's haunted house event...update

WOW! There have been a lot of busy hands down in the bowels of the old country store!
Saws have been buzzing, hammers have been pounding, gore has been spilling!
The scenes are getting knocked out and the trickery is getting polished up with everything coming together amazingly well!

The one thing we could see more of are volunteers inside the maze of madness! If any of you wacky PBL members know someone that enjoys frightening people or just wearing masks, send them down to us at the country store so we can get our spook on!

There are commitment sheets available to sign up on the wall at the Temple of Terror and there is plenty still to do for anyone that is just trying to kill some time before Thursday!

This Halloween event is going to be heck of a thriller and I am personally very proud to be a member of the PBL class that is putting this together! It may be a LOT of work, but it will be well worth the blood, sweat, and tears of pulling this scary event together when we get to see the class come together to scare the entire community!

BAKE SALE SIGN UPS AND REMINDERS

DON'T FORGET THE BAKE SALE IS THIS MONDAY! If you have signed up to work the table PLEASE do not forget. If for some reason you can't make it at the time you signed up please do your best to let either myself or somebody working the table already know that you will not be able to make it. Also could you PLEASE try to be on time to your scheduled time so that the people working the prior shift can make it to their next class or work on time! Here is the list of people who have signed up to work the table:

8:30 - 9:30
Alexander Kimm (Please do not forget to pick up the cash box PRIOR to the bake sale start)

9:30 - 10:30
Alexander Kimm
Melanie Lapsley
Alejandro Medina Meza
Marissa Potter

10:30 - 11:30
Jody Mathews
Melanie Lapsley
Barbara Kisling

11:30 -12:30
Melanie Lapsley
Patricia Bradford
W.G. Kincheloe
Kim P.

12:30 - 1:30
Melanie Lapsley
Patricia Bradford

Whoever is working the last shift of the bake sale needs to make sure that the cash box is given to the treasurer at the end of the bake sale so that funds can be deposited and accounted for!

If you can not remember if you signed up to bring items to the bake sale then here is the list of names that I have of those who signed up to bring items:

Jody Mathews
Melanie Lapsley
Patricia Bradford
W.G. Kincheloe
Marissa
Nick McShane
Debra
Jessica Masen
Denise Dennis
Candyce Conley
Maye
Sierra Morford
Laura Salgado
Kimberly Patzkowski
Teresa Murphy
Mike Hays

I ask that if you bring items for the bake sale you bring them to our table downstairs where the bake sale will be held BEFORE the start of class and before the start of the bake sale so that we will have adequate time to set up and make sure that all items are priced. It would be VERY helpful to us in pricing items if you could bring them already priced, BUT if you don't it is not a major deal...it just means we will need to set prices on more items. Please DO NOT FORGET that if you bring brownies, cookies, etc. they need to be INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED. If it is not individually wrapped then we have to sell it as an entire item which could mean that we do not sell that item. There are some additional requirements for the bake sale as far as what can't be brought (items that need to be kept cold, etc.), but I don't think we will have an issue with those and I will double check with Mike to ensure what those requirements are and to make sure that they are announced during Friday's meeting.

Thank you to everybody who has signed up to help! With all of the goodies that people are saying they will be bringing I think this bake sale will be a HUGE success!

Great appreciation for this blogspot!

Kudo's to the person or people who got this blogspot up and going. What a spectacular idea!! It is a perfect way for me to keep up on what is going on with PBL. I really miss being more involved, but because of my work schedule, I am limited right now. I am working between 32 and 40 hours per week, keeping up with a 20 credit schedule, and homework. My email is grammie2b@yahoo.com. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Hey all! Just wanted to share a few pictures I finally got ahold of.

Don't we look awsome?!?

Our wonderful executive officers. (Left to right)
Lakatherine Borgers, Kimberly Patzkowski, Tip Linden,
Joshua Conley, Candace Conley

A big thanks to David Walk "Media Dave" for taking these pictures.

And also I would like to annouce that we officially have a camera for event
picture taking. Again, the great workings of David Walk. He gave me a crash
course on picture taking. Any pictures taken I will submit to him for quality
approval and he is working on setting up a screen saver for PBL. So....need
pictures taken during an event? I'm your woman!

Temple of Terror! PBL's haunted house event

Thanks to everyone in the club for the support and assistance in getting this project off the ground, it is a short amount of time to get it set up but there are so many dedicated people working on this project that it is coming along amazingly well!

For anybody interested in assisting in the setup of this project, every weekday after 1:30pm, the doors are open and there is someone there willing to put you to work! Additionally, on the weekends, usually after 1pm are a safe bet to get some work time in.

The plastic for barriers are scheduled to be in on Monday and we will really get to rockin' and rollin' once that is set up! Until then, we could use people that are handy with constructing minor props (like tables and such). We are also looking for ANY crazy donations to make this fright fest really POP!

Quick update on the Holiday Gift Wrapping

We are still moving forward with this project. I spoke with Walmart yesterday and unfortunately we will not be able to use the space like we had originally anticipated being able to. We are looking into a few additional places, but we would LOVE any suggestions for other places that may be good to do holiday gift wrapping.

Class Updates

Wednesday is presentation day and I have the following students listed as giving a presentation:
Group 1 WG
Group 2 Debra
Group 3 Alice D
Group 4 Alice P
Group 5 Marissa
Group 6 Bruce
Group 7 Laura

If you missed the group discussions on Monday you owe me a paper on the topic and it must include some outside reading sources on the topic.

Next Monday the 19th we will have a whole class discussion on team player/understanding the company. Wednesday we will have breakout groups again on Leadership and the presentations for that subject will be on Monday the 26th.

Remember in addition to the Monday, Wednesday class projects, you must attend Tuesday PBL committee meetings and Friday PBL meetings (attendance has seemed to be lower on those two days). You also must be active in club fundraising, professional development and community service projects. (and it looks like there a many great projects to choose from!)

See you in class!

Mike

About the blog

It seems that a lot of people are getting on here which is excellent! If you would like some brief tutoring or explanation as to how to utilize this online tool, please ask as I want to help everyone have a voice in this very motivated club!

One thing I would suggest when writing a post (if you haven't done so already) is to attach some labels to the message before you post it (the place to do this is just under the text editor). By including labels, you are increasing the keyword search percentage for the club and ranking it higher (theoretically) in search engines.

Also, learn how to add links or modify text colors, maybe even add a picture for double the Spearmint fun!

Again, just ask and ye shall receive!

Community Service Fall Happenings

THANKSGIVING DINNER FOOD DRIVE
This is the time of year to say “thanks” and to be thankful for all that we have, and all that we have to offer our neighbors. So this fall PBL has decided to hold a Thanksgiving dinner themed food drive.

Club members will be collecting the non-perishable ingredients for a complete Thanksgiving dinner, such as stuffing and instant mashed potatoes, canned veggies and fruit, canned pie filling and pie crust mix, foil pans and pie pans, canned gravy and broth, etc., as well as gift certificates or money donations to purchase turkeys. Everything we collect will be turned into boxed Thanksgiving dinners for area families in need. Each box (or basket, since they will be delivered in laundry baskets) should feed an average family of four (2 adults/2 children).

The food drive is scheduled to begin November 1st 2009, with donation drop-off sites at participating Walla Walla and College Place grocery stores. Look for our box on the WWCC campus, too!

The following is a list of dates and times we will be set up outside area businesses to collect donations:
Sunday, November 1st
Saturday, November 7th & Sunday, November 8th
Saturday, November 14th & Sunday, November, 15th
Saturday, November 21st & Sunday, November 22nd

Saturdays: 9:00 – 12:00 Sundays: 10:00 – 1:00

We will need people to work these shifts. You may work the whole shift, or only an hour of one. A signup sheet will be available shortly, as will a list of confirmed locations.

Thanks Josh

This will be a great thing for our club and I hope many members will participate. I am not comfortable with process yet, but hope to have time to drop a pearl of wisdom or two.

Highway Clean-Up

Highway Clean-Up this Saturday was a success! The weather cooperated and it actually turned out to be a pretty nice day. I wanted to thank Joshua Conley, Terry Newson, Jennifer Rand, Jessica Mason, Michael Brown, and Kathy Hendrickson for giving up some of their Saturday to help out with the litter patrol. Another big thank you to Mike for supplying the refreshments. THANKS EVERYONE!

A little thanks & the first what's happening post

First off I would like to thank Josh for getting this started. IT LOOKS GREAT! I am excited to see this blog grow and blossom into so much more. While there are few posts on here now, this blog will soon grow into a place where we can keep each other updated on what is going on in PBL and post ideas we have to get some help devoloping them into bigger ideas. With that being said...I would like to give everybody the first update with what is going on in the Fundraising group.

This quarter is off to a HUGE start for fundraising and I am VERY excited to see what other ideas we will have develop throughout the rest of the quarter and also throughout the coming year. Here is what we currently have going on!

1. Halloween Themed Bake Sale

On Monday October 26 there will be a Halloween themed bake sale from 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM under the knee (our usual spot for bake sales). If you are interested in helping work the table or bring some goodies and have yet to sign up on the sign up sheet PLEASE CONTACT ME AND LET ME KNOW. The more help we have the better! We are requesting (not required) that we have home baked goodies since they seem to sell better and faster, BUT (as stated above) IT IS NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE HOME BAKED. I am a mother of two and understand how tight things can get and how busy you can get between everything going on so don't feel bad if you can't do home baked, but want to bring something.

2. Holiday Gift Wrapping

We are currently working on securing a facility to do some holiday gift wrapping on the biggest Christmas shopping days of the year. We all know what days those are......this year those days will be November 27-29 (if we can get a facility secured for all those days!). We are currently looking at working things out with Walmart to use the empty space where Blimpies use to be located just inside the grocery side doors. Once we have a facility secured for usage there will be many more updates, but I wanted to give everybody a "heads up" to save the date because we anticipate this to be a HUGE fundraiser and will need all the help we can get on this one (we all know how crazy that first Christmas shopping day can be!).

3. Cookbook

We are working on completing a cookbook that was compiled last year. In our Tuesday meeting we will be discussing the putting together of a sub committee for the cookbook to make the final decisions on design before it will be brought to the club to approve/deny the amount to be spent on the cookbook. We are pushing to get this done soon so that we can get the cookbook sent in and back in time to sell for Christmas.

4. Christmas Party

In our Friday meeting we decided to move forward with putting together a Christmas party. While no date is set in stone yet, it was suggested that we have it on December 12 this year. When more updates are available I will make another post with the updates.

These are all the updates that I have for you currently. As more updates come available I will make them known to you on here and in our meetings. Thanks for all the help so far and I look forward to this being a GREAT quarter!

Great Job!

Thanks Josh for all your hard work in developing this blog site. I am excited at the prospect of having a great tool like this to help improve and enhance communications within our club. I plan to use it frequently and students should watch for reminders about class, shared materials I find that might be interesting and of course-"stories".

The one positive side to having a blog is that if you get tired of my stories you can delete or ignore them! But Josh has assured me he is working on a way to monitor this, so soon I will be able to catch when you are ignoring me lol.
